Jesus Christ's Last Will And Testament
A will is a legal document in which a person owning property makes a declaration of the testator’s intentions concerning the disposition of this property upon his death. The Gospel of Christ is Jesus Christ’s last will and testament!
What are the requirements for a Will and Testament? First, a will must be witnessed by an authorized person. Jesus Christ authorized his apostles to be his witnesses. “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8).
Second, a will must be recorded in order to be a valid will. Jesus’ will is recorded in the
New Testament for all mankind to see and know. “How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?” (Hebrews 2:3-4).
Third, a will must be sealed by death of the person who commissioned the will. Jesus Christ death upon the cross brought to an end the Law of Moses and established Christ’s new covenant or law with mankind under his gospel. “How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance. For where there is a testament, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. For a testament is in force after men are dead, since it has no power at all while the testator lives” (Hebrews 9:14-17). A person can change their will as often as they desire before their death, but upon their death no one can legally abrogate it or any of its provisions.
Fourth, a will must be published after the death of the testator. Jesus Christ commissioned the apostles to publish his will to the entire world. “Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:18-19).
The Apostles of Jesus Christ named the beneficiaries of Christ’s will. “Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome” (1 John 5:1-3). In order to be a child of God and one of his beneficiaries an individual must have a strong faith and love for God and be willing to obey his will.
Christ’s bequests are greatly to be desired:
Pardon for the guilty
Peace for the troubled
Comfort for the sorrowing
Salvation for the believing
Heaven for the faithful.
