First Priority
We live in an information age where everyone is constantly exposed to targeted messages. Recently a religious pamphlet was placed in my paper box. The message was emphatic that all the signs were present indicating that the end of the world was near. The document pointed to the current economic crises as an indicator of the end. Other natural calamities around the globe were signs of imminent destruction. The reader was encouraged to recognize these signs as a warning of pending chaos and begin in earnest to make preparation. A list of first priority items were given, such as, non-perishable food items, batteries, a self-powered radio and other necessities.
We appreciate that others are concerned and worried for our personal welfare. We don't question their sincerity recognizing they offer a practical solution to a perceived catastrophic event. However, we have to evaluate the messenger and consider the recommended solution. Who is best qualified to offer advice about what preparation I should be making for this life and the judgment to come? The Bible tells us that Jesus would be born to Mary and he would save his people (Matthew 1:21). The name Jesus itself means “Jehovah is salvation” (Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words, p.604). What advice would Jesus, the Savior, give me?
After Jesus called his first disciples and began his earthly ministry in Galilee, great crowds followed him because he had something worthwhile to teach and he confirmed his doctrine by powerful miracles among the people (Matthew 4;23-25). Observing this large following, his disciples gathered to him on the mount to hear the words of Jesus (Matthew 5:1). Jesus' subject matter deals with the issues of life and practical advice about our relationship with one another and with our Creator. In Matthew 6:25-34, Jesus offers advice about the challenges of physical life and the anxieties we often have about the future. This section of scripture contains some of the most comforting words of the Bible and some of the most beneficial advice ever given to mankind. Jesus acknowledges that we have physical needs for food, drink and clothing and states that God knows we have these needs. Yet, what amount of worry from within us can add a single hour to our life span (Matthew 6:27)? The answer is obvious.
Life today is as challenging as it was when Jesus walked the earth. None of us knows what tomorrow may bring. Jesus said, God knows what I need and he is capable of providing splendidly. Trust in God and be busy. The advice is simple “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”- Matthew 6:33
