 Ephesians 1.10 has been called the main theme of Ephesians. There Paul talks about God’s plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. In Ephesians 2, Paul goes into detail about how, why, and the result of what God made happen. Your salvation is a result of God’s work, not your own

  1. Ephesians 2.1-3 - Six Key Words that Illustrate Spiritual Death 
    1. 2.1 - We were dead. Our bodies were alive, but spiritually, we were dead.
      1. 4.18 - alienated from the life of God.
      2. We lost the relationship and became unable to enjoy God’s spiritual blessings.
    2. 2.1 - Trespasses - “to slip,” “fall off” “get off the path.” “To lose your way.”
    3. 2.1 - Sins - “to shoot at something and miss.” “To fail to hit the target.”
      1. What is the target? perfection. 1 Peter 1.15 - be holy as I am holy.
      2. Romans 3.23 - No person hits the target every time - for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
      3. Romans 7.15; 18-24 - It’s what we can’t do that manifests our sin - and what we can’t do is be perfectly holy.
    4. 2.2 - Worldliness - walking in the course of this world. 
    5. 2.2 - Satan: The prince of the power of the air. The spirit now at work.
    6. 2.2 - Disobedience - Satan is working in the sons of disobedience.
    7. 2.3 - Passions - describes people who do whatever their mind or body desires.
    8. Where does it all lead? 2.3b - wrath. Condemnation. See John 3.18.
      1. Living death. This is where you were. This is who you were. 
  2. Ephesians 2.4-7 - Dying to Life
    1. 2.4 - Mercy: Not giving sinners what they deserve. See Psalm 103.10.
      1. Notice, he is rich in mercy. It is limitless; exhaustless; and boundless.
    2. 2.5b - Grace: pardons and releases forgiveness. Grace gives us what we do not deserve.
    3. 2.4 - Love: why God did what he did. Not because of anything we did.
      1. Romans 5.8 - He loved everyone that is opposite of what is attractive to him.
      2. John 15.13 - the greatest love of all….
    4. 2.5, 6 - Resurrection: He made us alive. He raised us up.
    5. 2.5, 6 - Christ. Together with Christ. With Him.
      1. John 11.25 - Jesus not only died for our sins, but he rose to provide life.
      2. Romans 6.3-5 - This is the gospel.
    6. 2.6 - Heavenly places. We’ve been raised up and seated with him. 
  3. CONCLUSION
    1. How do I get there?
    2. 2.8 - God asks for you to believe.
    3. Romans 6.3-6 - Will you die with Him?
