Hope Does Not Disappoint

Series: The Church: A Place Of Hope

During March, April, and May we’ve worked hard to stress the importance of the church in your life. This is a place of refuge. This is a place of comfort. This is a place of hope. It is why I’m so excited to talk to you about Romans 5 today.

A Brief Review of Romans 1-4

5.2 - Three Realities That Result from Our Salvation

  1. Romans 5.1 - Note that we are justified by faith.
    1. We have been declared righteous. Peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
    2. See also Ephesians 2.14 & Isaiah 32.17 - Jesus is our peace. (present tense)
  2. Romans 5.2 - we have obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand.
    1. Grace is the operative principle of the kingdom of God.
    2. 1 John 1.8-2.3 - We stand in grace through the constant intercession of Christ.
    3. What does this cleansing get us? Romans 5.2 - access. “To be ushered into the presence of royalty.”
  3. 5.2b-5 - hope for glory.
    1. Really, this is very basic to our spiritual life. 8.24 - we were saved in hope.
    2. Ephesians 1.11-13 - you have been secured in this hope by the Spirit dwelling in your life. See 1.18 - Prayer for enlightenment of this reality.

Romans 5.2c - Rejoice in the Hope of Glory

  1. 5.2c - We rejoice. (Exult NASV).
    1. Think jubilation. Being ecstatic. Happy at the highest level of joy.
    2. When Paul speaks of rejoicing in 5.2c, there is no fear in his mind.
  2. 5.2d - hope of the glory of God.
    1. We’re going to get to share in the glory that belongs to God.
    2. John 17.22 - Jesus pledged it to us before He died. Amazing isn’t it?
    3. Romans 8.18, 23-24 - There is so much more to come. We’re not what we’re going to be.

Romans 5.3-4 - What We Do While We Await Our Final Salvation

  1. 5.3-4 - The valleys of life are actually a place that can produce spiritual fruit.
    1. Perseverance, character, and hope.
      1. Endurance - “perseverance” “to remain.”
      2. Character - “tested” or “proven character.”
    2. One by one, God is at work removing our flaws.
  2. This leads to an expanded more wondrous, joyful, and fulfilling hope.
    1. “The tree shaken by the storm roots itself more deeply.”
    2. 1 Thessalonians 3.2-4 - you live in this life - you are destined for affliction.

Conclusion:

  1. 5.5a - Hope does not disappoint.
  2. 5.5b-6 - Peace, grace, and hope are built on the immense and amazing love of God.
