Why Build a Spiritual Life Plan?

Series: Building Your Spiritual Life Plan

In his book, Million Miles in a Thousand Years Donald Miller talks about crossing a stretch of water - not just leaving shore and reaching the other side, but also “the hard work of the middle.” It’s a metaphor for anything meaningful we undertake. Get started on your spiritual goals - you find yourself full of anticipation and progress. Then it fades - as we find self in the middle - wondering if we have the fortitude to make it to the other side. How do we get through it? Today’s lesson will show you how.

The Myth of Fast, Fun, & Easy

  1. Everything important requires work.
  2. This is the message of Hebrews 12.1-3, 11-13. Discipline yields the peaceful                  fruit of righteousness...

4 Ways to Resist Fast, Fun, & Easy

  1. Keep the proper perspective.
    1. The lives of Bible characters were not an instant shot to the top with no setbacks.
      1. 1 Samuel 18.9 - And Saul  eyed  David from that day on.
    2. God’s word is brutally honest. Obstacles and even outright failure will happen.
  2. Create a new frame.
    1. What could this obstacle make possible? How can I grow from this?
    2. In 2 Corinthians 4.1 - Paul resolved not to lose heart. See also 4.5, 11.
  3. Practice self-compassion.
    1. Perfectionism will derail us from achieving our goals.
    2. See Ephesians 1.7 (rich in grace), 2.4 (rich in mercy) 2.4 (great love); 2.7 (immeasurable riches).
    3. 1 John 2.1-2a - Jesus is our advocate  and continually remains as the propitiation for our sins.
  4. A sense of agency.
    1. I must work hard to achieve what I want.
    2. We cooperate with   God  , Philippians 2.13.

Finding Out Your Why

  1. One of the first places to begin is to remember God’s vision for us:
    1. Romans 8.29 - Transformation into the image of Christ.
    2. Ephesians 4.13 - Spiritual maturity. To the measure of the stature of the                                           fullness  of Christ.
    3. Titus 2.7-8a - To be a model of good works. It makes itself known through integrity, dignity and sound speech.

How to Make it Work

  1. First, identify your    key motivations   .
  2. Second,   write   your motivations down. (Focus on the positive.)
  3. People lose their way when they lose their why.

Conclusion

  1. Remember, you live in the reality of grace. God is calling you to step out in faith.
  2. Have you trusted him for salvation?
