What is the Gospel?

Series: Evangelism & Church Growth

When it comes to God’s work — no man can give the increase. 1 Corinthians 3.5-6 - God grows the church. We’re all planters and waterers. Ephesians 4.11-13 - What is the job of evangelists, shepherds, & teachers? To equip the saints and build up the existing body. Who does the work of ministry? Saints. The growth and well-being of this church should be on the mind of every single member. One of the most basic ways you help is by sharing Jesus. What is the gospel? 1 Corinthians 15.1-4 is one of the best summaries anywhere.

Paul’s Basic Purpose:

  1. 15.1-2 - preaching the gospel was fundamental to everything Paul did.
    1. 15.1 serves as a bookend to 1.17. Teaching / persuading was Paul’s mission.
    2. What is the gospel? 15.3-4 - Is a great summary.
  2. This is not just about the facts -- but what it means.

15.3: Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures:

  1. Christ: Refers to Jesus’ messiahship. He is the “anointed one.”
    1. Jesus is God the Son who became man.
      1. Isaiah 7.14 - Immanuel / God with us; Isaiah 9.6 - Mighty God
      2. John 1.1, 14 - The Word was God; The Word became flesh and dwelt among us; Titus 2.13 - Jesus is our great God and Savior.
    2. Revisit Isaiah 9.6:
      1. Unto us a child is born - refers to his humanity.
      2. To us a son is given - refers to his deity. Connect to John 3.16.
  2. Died for our sins according to the Scriptures:
    1. Sins: This is the bad news. Romans 3.10 - there is none righteous, no one; Romans 3.23 - all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
    2. Died: A simple definition for death: “punishment from God for sin.”
    3. Jesus died in our place; John 3.16; Isaiah 53.6; 2 Corinthians 5.21; 1 Peter 2.24; 3.18; John 10.17-18 - voluntary; Romans 3.24-26 - sacrificial

15.4a - He was buried:

  1. Jesus died. It was not a spiritual burial. They buried the body of Christ.
  2. John 19.38-42

15.4b - He was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures:

  1. Death could not hold him. You will not let your holy one see corruption
    1. Prophesied in Psalm 16.8-10; Peter applied this to Jesus - Acts 2.25-32
    2. Paul spoke of this matter-of-factly - Romans 1.4
  2. Luke 24.36-44, specifically 24.39-40 - see my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see. This was a bodily resurrection.

What this means for you and me:

  1. We can be justified. See Romans 4.24-25. or how far we’ve wandered.
  2. We too will be resurrected at Jesus’ return.
    1. 1 Corinthians 6.14 - God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by His power… See also 1 Thessalonians 4.14

Conclusion:

  1. This is the gospel. 1 Corinthians 3.5-6 - we’re all planters and waterers.
  2. We have the assurance - that if we’re doing our part - God will do His part and the church will grow.
