“Seeing Sin For What It Really Is”
And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the people of Israel, saying, If anyone sins unintentionally in any of the LORD’s commandments about things not to be done, and does any one of them, if it is the anointed priest who sins, thus bringing guilt on the people, then he shall offer for the sin that he has committed a bull from the herd without blemish to the LORD for a sin offering. He shall bring the bull to the entrance of the tent of meeting before the LORD and lay his hand on the head of the bull and kill the bull before the LORD.
TODAY’S READING: Leviticus 1-4
On the surface, we may dismiss Leviticus as just a collection of outdated and obsolete laws for a people who lived 4000 years ago. But as we dig deeper into the book, we can see the same eternal principles that guide us today. Some may be disgusted with all the details of animal sacrifice that are listed throughout Leviticus. But, every single day in Israel, God’s people were very acquainted with the penalty for sin: death. When someone sinned, something had to die. The number of sacrifices was unending. Ultimately, because of our sin, Jesus had to die. He is the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, John 1.29. Our continual challenge is to see sin for how disgusting it really is. Don’t let darkness deceive you. Live each day in thankfulness for the power of Jesus to destroy your sin and redeem you from the bondage of Satan. Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, Galatians 3.13a
